General information on PFAS
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of synthetic chemicals widely used in many industrial processes and consumer products because of their resistance to heat, water, and chemicals.
Some of these substances are extremely persistent in the environment and can accumulate in the environment and the human body. Due to these growing concerns, regulatory initiatives aim to restrict the manufacture, use, and placement on the market of PFAS across a wide range of applications.
However, fluoropolymers which are non-toxic and non-bioaccumulative and used in many industries in sealing materials for critical applications should be exempted where their specific performance characteristics are necessary to ensure safety and reliability and where suitable alternatives are not available.
More information can be found on the PFAS information hub – ESA’s central source for for PFAS-related materials, including regulatory updates, position papers, case studies, and industry responses.
