To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day (23 June), World Pumps magazine published a feature highlighting the voices of female engineers in the pump and sealing industries. Among those interviewed was Francesca Torriani, Chair of the ESA’s Flange Gaskets Division and a senior engineer and quality manager at General Packing Italy.

In the article titled Engineering Equality, Francesca shares her experience in the field and encourages more young women to pursue engineering. “It’s a field that presents many challenges but also offers tremendous satisfaction,” she says. “You get to collaborate with diverse teams and contribute to impactful projects across various sectors.”

Importantly, Francesca also points to the need for systemic solutions – equal pay, access to childcare, flexible working hours – as a foundation for greater gender inclusion in the profession. As she puts it: “We shouldn’t fear change. We should embrace it as an opportunity for growth and inclusiveness.”
